TPE yoga mat printing or engraving: what is the best choice?

At first glance, a yoga mat with a logo seems like an easy product to personalize. Logo on it, roll it up and you're done.
In practice this is different.
Especially one TPE yoga mat the choice of personalization technique is important. TPE is soft, flexible and is constantly stressed during use. The mat is rolled up, rolled out, pressed and during exercise it comes into contact with hands, feet and perspiration.
We have had TPE yoga mats printed in the past. We now prefer to choose TPE yoga mats laser engraving.
Why? We explain this below.
What is TPE?
TPE stands for thermoplastic elastomer. It is a collective name for materials that combine properties of plastic and rubber.
The material is flexible and resilient and therefore very suitable for yoga mats and fitness mats, for example.
Our TPE yoga mats include:
- soft and comfortable;
- non-slip;
- tear-resistant;
- water resistant;
- latex-free;
- recyclable.
With a size of 183 × 61 cm and a thickness of 6mm they provide a comfortable surface for yoga, stretching and other exercises.
In addition, there are more than 50 color options available. This allows you to choose a color that fits well with a corporate identity or campaign.
Why is a TPE yoga mat difficult to print?
TPE has properties that are pleasant for a yoga mat: it is soft and flexible.
But these properties also place demands on a print.
A traditional print is applied to the surface. During use, that surface is constantly deformed and stressed.
Consider:
- rolling up the mat over and over again;
- stretch and movement of the material;
- friction by hands and feet;
- perspiration;
- regularly clean the mat.
Depending on the ink used, printing technique and intensity of use, a print may show wear over time.
Why did we switch to laser engraving?
This is not a purely theoretical choice for us.
In the past we had our TPE yoga mats printed. In practice, it turned out that a print did not always offer the durability we wanted for this product when used intensively. That is why we started looking for another solution.
We found that in laser engraving.
With laser engraving, no separate ink layer is applied to the yoga mat. The laser changes the surface of the material itself, making the logo part of the mat.
This has an important advantage with TPE: there is no printing on top of the mat that can wear off due to normal use.
What are the benefits of an engraved TPE yoga mat?
1. No ink layer on the surface
With an engraving, the design is applied to the surface.
This means that a print cannot crack or peel off, as is possible with some forms of printing.
2. Suitable for intensive use
A yoga mat is a consumer product.
Sustainable personalization is especially important for products that are frequently touched, rolled and cleaned.
3. Subtle, professional appearance
A laser engraving has a different appearance than a brightly colored print.
The logo becomes more part of the material. This creates a calm and high-quality appearance that fits well with wellness, yoga, sports and vitality programs.
4. No additional printing ink required
No printing ink is required to apply the engraving.
This is also interesting when consciously looking at the materials and techniques used for a promotional gift.
Can any logo be engraved?
Not every design comes into its own with laser engraving in the same way.
Laser engraving is particularly suitable for:
- company logos;
- texts;
- logos;
- simple line illustrations;
- larger designs.
An important difference with printing is laser engraving does not create a PMS or full-color logo. The final contrast is created by the reaction of the TPE material to the laser.
Do you want to reproduce a logo exactly in the corporate identity colors? Then a different personalization technique may sometimes be more suitable.
It is therefore wise to not only look at the logo, but also at the use of the mat.
How big can a logo become on a TPE yoga mat?
One of the interesting features of laser engraving is that, depending on the design and production method, there is a large engraving surface is possible.
This means you do not automatically have to limit yourself to a small logo in a corner of the yoga mat.
A larger logo, text or design can become part of the overall design of the mat.
This offers interesting possibilities for, for example:
- gyms;
- yoga studios;
- employers;
- vitality programs;

With a large logo, it remains important to look at the relationship between design, mat and color. Bigger is not automatically more beautiful.

And green, for example, is not simply green.

By first choosing a suitable base color and then adding a subtle engraving, a completely different effect can be created than with a standard yoga mat on which only a colored logo is printed.

Which technique would we choose?
For a promotional application where a logo must be displayed prominently in color, printing can be interesting.
But at one TPE yoga mat that is actually and regularly used, we prefer laser engraving.
Not because printing is necessarily bad, but because our practical experience has shown that the combination of flexible TPE + intensive use + rolling + friction places high demands on a print.
With laser engraving we therefore opt for a personalization that better suits the properties and use of the product.

Both techniques have their own possibilities, but laser engraving has important advantages for intensively used TPE yoga mats.
